Overconstrained models of time delay lenses redux: how the angular tail wags the radial dog

چکیده

The two properties of the radial mass distribution a gravitational lens that are well-constrained by Einstein rings radius R_E and xi2 = alpha''(R_E)/(1-kappa_E), where alpha''(R_E) kappa_E second derivative deflection profile convergence at R_E. However, if there is tight mathematical relationship between angular structure, as true ellipsoids, an ring can appear to strongly distinguish distributions with same xi2. This problem beautifully illustrated ellipsoidal models in Millon et al. (2019). When using constrain distribution, structure must contain all degrees freedom expected nature (e.g., external shear, different ellipticities for stars dark matter, modest deviations from elliptical twists axes, ellipticity gradients, etc.) work decouple gravity. Models too few will lead biased likelihood distinctions very precise but inaccurate estimates H0 based on time delays.

The Tail that Wags the Dog

Tails are of paramount importance in shaping the risk profile of portfolios with credit risk sensitive securities. In this context risk management tools require simulations that accurately capture the tails, and optimization models that limit tail effects. Ignoring the tails in the simulation or using inadequate optimization metrics can have significant effects and destroy portfolio efficiency....

Tail wags dog: primary cilia and tumorigenesis.

Aberrant activation of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway contributes to many forms of cancer. Primary cilia are Hh signal transduction centers. Two papers in a recent issue of Nature Medicine (Han et al., 2009; Wong et al., 2009) show that mutating cilia can increase or reduce the rates of tumorigenesis depending on how the Hh pathway is disrupted.

Beware the tail that wags the dog: informal and formal models in biology

Informal models have always been used in biology to guide thinking and devise experiments. In recent years, formal mathematical models have also been widely introduced. It is sometimes suggested that formal models are inherently superior to informal ones and that biology should develop along the lines of physics or economics by replacing the latter with the former. Here I suggest to the contrar...

The tail that wags the dog: the globular tail domain defines the function of myosin V/XI.

Actin-based organelle movements are driven by the related multifunctional myosin motors of class V in animals and fungi and class XI in plants. The versatility of these motors depends critically on their C-terminal globular tail domain that allows them to bind to a broad variety of cargo molecules. Regulation of this motor-cargo attachment is frequently employed to modulate organelle movement. ...

"The Tail Wags the Dog": A Study of Anomaly Detection in Commercial Application Performance

The IT industry needs systems management models that leverage available application information to detect quality of service, scalability and health of service. Ideally this technique would be common for varying application types with different n-tier architectures under normal production conditions of varying load, user session traffic, transaction type, transaction mix, and hosting environmen...
